Overview

Day treks in Georgia’s remote high mountain regions of Svaneti and Kazbegi.

Introduction

The trip starts with a flight to Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi, from where you’ll travel west into the heart of the Svaneti region. This isolated area of subalpine forests, imposing glaciated mountains, deep gorges and medieval villages is famous for its rich church-art heritage, with tiny local churches boasting frescos 1,000 year old. You’ll trek though alpine meadows and over mountain passes, including the spectacular Guli Pass (2,925m), Tetnuldi Pass (2,700m) and Chkhutnieri Pass (2,700m) and view the highest peak in Georgia – Mount Shkhara (5,067m).

Having returned to Tbilisi, you’ll then travel north to Kazbegi and trek below the rocky Chaukhi mountains and 5,000m high Mount Kazbek. On this trip, which is suitable for fit walkers, you will be accommodated in a mix of hotels, guest houses and homestays. Tourism is increasing in Georgia, but you should expect to see an old-style way of life and to find the local people very welcoming.
