A week-long trek across the Hardangervidda plateau
Introduction
Join us on the west side of Norway's high arctic plateau - Hardangervidda - covering approximately 82Km and averaging 20Km most days, walking at an altitude of 1200 - 1400m. This part of the plateau is a gem with its changing landscape, and it's rich and varied flora and fauna. Crossing this plateau is a real 'classic' tour, and this route passes by Harteigen - a top hat shaped mountain top that seems to rise out of nowhere from the surrounding plateau. This is the perfect week for those of you who love to be out enjoying nature on longer distance hikes with a lightweight backpack, and are keen to learn more about the network of Norwegian mountain hyttes.
Tailor-made option
We can organise this trek on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your trekking experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.Experience Required
The trek is suitable for fit walkers who are able to carry a light pack (max 10Kg) for up to 6 - 7 hours a day. Some of the trails are very rocky, so you need to be confident walking on this type of terrain.Additional Information

Typical Itinerary
Day 1: | Fly London to Oslo Arrive at Oslo Gardermoen airport and take the onward 1.5 hr train journey to Kongsberg (cost not included), where you will meet your guide. We walk for approx 50 minutes up the hillside to the ski centre above the town to our own sole-use traditional log cabin - we will be staying here overnight and we all help with food preparations/making food. |
Day 2: | We take the early-morning bus from Kongsberg to Geilo, arriving mid-morning. After a short break, another bus takes us over the stunning high Hardangervidda road passing the Hardanger icecap before dropping down to Ovre Eidfjord with views down into Hardanger fjord, and a 20 minute taxi ride to Asadalen. We walk the final 2 hrs along the beautiful Veig river to the stunning setting for our first night's stay at Vivelid fjellstova - stay in 2-4 bed room (5km, 1.5hrs). |
Day 3: | We set off on our journey to Hadlaskard hytte today. The hytte is operated by DNT (Den Norske Turistforeningen) - a network of huts mostly located in the mountainous areas of Norway, and renowned places for meeting likeminded outdoor people. Our route follows one of the finest 'gateway routes' up Veigdalen valley, climbing up over Fljotdal and passing Hedlo hytte. We pass the old well-preserved stables along the way at Heimle Hallarskar, and also get our first view of Harteigen. The self-catering DNT hytte tonight has dormitory bunk bed rooms - be prepared to share with other hut users(16.6km, 5-6hrs). |
Day 4: | Today is our longest day - ascending steadily 500m up on the path heading south west, passing close by Harteigen at 1500m above sea level (and maybe even crossing a few remaining snow patches) before turning to go due south towards our end-goal - the fully catered cabin at Litlos. It will be a day when we get wet feet too, as we cross Viersdolo and some smaller rivers without bridges. Stay in 4-6 bunk bed rooms(22.7km 8.5-9.5hrs). |
Day 5: | On our route to Hellevassbu, we cross an area of undulating mountain peaks and lakes. We pass more signs of hunter's old cabins at Sore Belebotnen on the way and hopefully we will catch a glimpse of some of the wildlife they come to hunt - grouse, reindeer, and mountain hare. Overnight at the self-catering hytte in dormitory bunk bed rooms (16.5km, 6-7hrs). |
Day 6: | Our last day of walking, passing many lakes and Sandfloegga - the highest part of the Hardangervidda. All that is left is the descent from the southern edge of the plateau to the comfort of our 2-4 bed room at Haukeliseter fjellstue, and time to celebrate (21.4km, approx 8 hrs). |
Day 7: | Morning bus transfer back to Oslo bus station and onward by train to Oslo Gardermoen airport, arriving there early evening the same day. Evening flight home. |
