Exploration and 6,000m summits in Northern India
Introduction
In the summers of 2014 and 2015, Jagged Globe teams were successful in climbing both Mentok I (6,151m) and Mentok II (6,210m) in the Rupshu region of Northern India. This is a fascinating area where the mountains are more rolling than the Zanskar range further west.First you will acclimatise via a quiet trek east of Markha over passes as high as 5,000m. Then it’s a spectacular drive to Nurachan, where you’ll trek for three days through a wild area where our 2015 group witnessed evidence of Snow Leopard, before arriving at the Mentok peaks.
These mountains offer straightforward ascents on snow, with some easy rock scrambling. With a strong team and good conditions, it may be possible to climb both peaks, or to explore further mountaineering opportunities in this area.
Join us on Mentok Kangri
- Climb 6,151m Mentok I, a great introductory climb and big physical challenge
- Further mountaineering opportunities from base camp, or an ascent of Mentok II (6,210m)
- Complete a quiet acclimatisation trek over passes east of Markha
- Jagged Globe leader is supported by Nepalese Sherpas
- Mentok II climb in 2014 and Mentok I in 2015 by Jagged Globe teams

| Day 16 - 19: | Climb Mentok I (6,151m) and further exploration/ascent of Mentok II (6,210m) In 2014 and 2015 Jagged Globe teams climbed Mentok I and Mentok II. The two peaks are climbed from different base camps, so the option is to move base camp or potentially explore/climb a different summit from Mentok I base camp. For Mentok I, 1.5hrs of boulder hopping takes you to the base of the cirque at c5,700m where you’ll swap from light boots into heavier mountaineering boots. You’ll don crampons here and rope up before gaining the glacier and heading towards the obvious ridge. Once on the ridge, this is followed to a final steepening and the summit. This climb is made in one day from base camp. With days to spare, the team has the option of moving base camps and also attempting Mentok II (6,210m). Mentok II base camp is located at 5,500m. Moraine is ascended to reach easy-angled icefields at 5,650m, which broadly follow the line of the mountain's north east ridge and the easiest route to the summit. From a rock band at c5,850m some good scrambling through large jumbled blocks of granite provide access to a final icefield at c6,000m and a small col a little further on. The final 300m to the summit follows a broad, 30 degree ridge to the summit. |
| Day 20: | Descend Base Camp to Korzok |
| Day 21: | Drive to Leh 3 hour walk down to BC, then 7 hour drive back to Leh. Overnight local hotel. |
| Day 22: | Fly Leh to Delhi Overnight hotel. |
| Day 23: | Fly from Delhi to London |
IMPORTANT NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns, landslides, river crossings, the availability of horses and the health of climbers can all contribute to changes. The Expedition Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
