Introduction
Enjoy some early-season low level touring in this unspoilt corner of the French Alps. Renowned for its snow and sunshine records, the Queyras National Park offers a multitude of peaks perfect for ski mountaineering. This week is suitable for beginners and experienced tourers, who are not necessarily looking for a big physical challenge. Expect comfortable accommodation and good food in mountain hotels, gîtes and huts. You start the week in Briancon, which is easily reached by train from Grenoble or Lyon.Start point: Briancon
Outline Programme
Day 1: | Course participants meet at the course base at 7pm. Briefing on the week's activities in the evening. |
Day 2: | Ascend to Col d'Estronques from Ceillac and descend to St. Véran. |
Day 3: | Day tour from St.Véran, hopefully to the Tête de Longet 3,146m. |
Day 4: | Ascend Pic Caramantran 3,025m and descend to the Agnel Hut. |
Day 5: | Tour of the Pain du Sucre and descend to the hamlet of Chianale, Italy. |
Day 6: | Pointe Joanne 3,052m then descend to Abriès. |
Day 7: | Day tour from Abriès, bus back to Guillestre. |
Day 8: | Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before skiers leave the course. |
Pre-Course Skiing Ability
Grade: 9C [ Ski Grading ]To join our Intermediate level hut-to-hut tours, you need to be a competent off piste skiers/ski mountaineer capable of skiing slopes up to 35° and ascending for 4 hours with a 8kg pack. A foundation course such as the Introductory Ski Mountaineering would be ideal preparation.

- 5 nights gite and mountain hut accommodation in a shared dormitory bunk, half-board basis
- 6 days ski guiding (including all the IFMGA Guide's fees and expenses). Ratio 1:6 maximum

We recommend that you fly to Grenoble or Lyon and get a train (4 - 5 hours) to Briancon.
The week starts and finishes in Briancon at the Auberge L'Echauguette. The accommodation is provided on a twin-share, half-board basis. A single room supplement is payable should you want to have a room to yourself.
