Introduction

This trip is an opportunity to discover three countries of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro.

For those who love skiing in unusual places the mountains of the Balkans offer a wealth of fabulous summits and valleys; paradise for the adventurous ski tourer. We will be aiming for several summits, great turns and an insight into life in the places we visit. Slovenia and Montenegro are particularly mountainous with stunning scenery and it is these two countries that we will spend the majority of our time. We will also ski in the Bosnian mountains and visit Sarajevo which will be of great interest to many of us.

What to expect

We start in Ljubljana, Slovenia where you will be met on arrival by my Slovenian colleague Tomaz. Jim first met Tomaz on an ice climbing trip to Slovenia many years ago and he is delighted to be working with him again. The group will base themselves in a traditional guest house in the town of Kranska Gora, day touring from there. It is too far to drive south to Bosnia and Montenegro, so after a night in Ljubljana we fly to Sarajevo where we ski for two days. We then drive to Montenegro for the final three days skiing, returning to Sarajevo to visit the city and enjoy our final evening together.

Wooded valleys and lower slopes will lead to open bowls, ridges and summits of up to 2,500m in height. The area has a maritime climate so weather could be pretty changeable with the upside being fresh tracks in new snow. One thing is for sure we will have little competition for those fresh tracks. Days will vary in length and skiers need to be able to cope with the unexpected whilst skiing and travelling.

What the price includes

• Flight from Ljubljana to Sarajevo with two piece baggage allowance

• All road transport. If everyone arrives and departs at different times the airport transfer is not included
• Half board accommodation on a twin share basis when in hotels and guest houses. The hut will be what it is!
