Skiing in the M'Goun Massif in the central High Atlas of Morocco

Introduction

Lying some 250km to the east of Marrakesh, the M’Goun Massif is in the central part of the High Atlas. Compared with the Toubkal area, the M’Goun is more remote, less frequented by tourists and the terrain gentler. We aim to ski the principal summits including Oumsoud (4,068m), the third (or fourth…) highest in Morocco.

Few week-long ski trips offer as much cultural interest, discovery and quality skiing as this one. We will visit and stay in several remote villages which will give us a most interesting insight into the daily lives of the Berber people. Delicious fresh food, mint tea and ski touring with mules – not to be missed!

What to expect

This is likely to be the more challenging of the two Morocco trips in 2019, although what we get up to depends, as always, on the weather and conditions.

Fresh snow transforms quickly at these latitudes so it is uncommon (but not unknown) to ski crust! We will be staying in simple guest houses, in people’s homes and in the basic but comfortable Tarkeddit Hut.

In general we will hike and ski with light day packs as vehicles and mules will be used to access the snow line. You will need to carry your sleeping bag to and from the Tarkeddit Hut. This will be Mountain Guide, Jim Blyth's seventh trip to Morocco and the first since late March 2010. The photos on this trip page were taken in February 2009. Late January to early March is the best time for skiing in the Atlas. There is no alcohol.
