Introduction
Although Turkey is better known for its beaches and places of historical interest it is a superb destination for a ski adventure. Many of the essential ingredients of a memorable ski holiday are present - wild, unspoilt terrain, great summits, beautiful slopes and much of cultural interest.Forty kilometres south of the Black Sea lie the Kackar Mountains, a range of glaciated peaks that culminate in 3937m Kackar Dagi. Here moisture laden air from the sea combines with cold winter temperatures to ensure abundant and reliable snowfall. It is therefore no surprise that this area is one of the most popular in Turkey for skiing and ski touring. Indeed, one of Turkey's most popular ski resorts, Palandoken is at Erzurum where we finish this trip.
