An ascent of one of Nepal's most popular 6,000m climbing peaks

Introduction

Island Peak is one of the most popular 6,000m climbing peaks in Nepal. This 20-day expedition itinerary ensures you acclimatise gradually whilst trekking up the Khumbu Valley, before reaching Island Peak. North of Namche, we don't follow the normal base camp trail; instead, we take a high-level route on the west side of the Dudh Khosi. This trail is more challenging, but it takes us through traditional farming villages and so gives a more authentic journey into the mountains. We return down the Everest trail to ensure no sights are missed.

For the climb, you have the advantage of a high camp at 5,600m, which makes the summit day shorter (others exclude this to give a shorter trip by enforcing a climb all the way from base camp at 5,000m). From high camp, the ascent begins with a scramble up a rocky gully to a ridge where you put on crampons and rope-up for the glacier crossing heading towards the south ridge. The route across the glacier is easy-angled, but it can be crevassed in places. From the bergschrund at the base of the headwall, 100m of snow and ice, as steep as 45° is climbed to arrive on the airy summit ridge. This is followed to the top, where you can enjoy fabulous views of Lhotse Shar, Makalu's West Face, the North Face of Baruntse and Ama Dablam's North Ridge.

Experience Required

Island Peak is not a 'Trekking Peak', as it involves steep, exposed climbing on snow and ice. To join this expedition you need to have completed climbs of at least Scottish Grade II or Alpine PD. You need to be able to abseil/rappel confidently without supervision.

Tailor-made option

We can organise this expedition on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your mountaineering experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Insurance

You will need a travel insurance policy that caters for the activities you will undertake on your trip with Jagged Globe. It is a requirement of our booking conditions that you have such a policy. IMPORTANT NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is adventure travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it! Weather conditions, availability of porters and the health of team members can all contribute to changes. The guides and their Sherpa assistants will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if necessary.

Optional Everest Base Camp - trek in/out

If you would like to extend your trip by 4 days and trek to Everest Base Camp, we recommend the following itinerary.

Day 15 - 16: Trek to Lobuje (4,940m) Descend from Chukkung to Dingboche and continue up the broad valley bottom towards Dugla, where you spend the night. From Dugla, the trail starts steeply to climb up beside the glacial moraine and after a few hours it leads to Lobuje.

Day 17: Trek to Everest Base Camp via Gorak Shep (5,220m). Gorak Shep, the site of the 1953 expedition's base camp, is 3 hours beyond Lobuje. From Gorak Shep you contour along the valley side and the trail leads onto the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. After three hours you reach base camp near the foot of the Khumbu Icefall. For those visiting base camp in the spring, it is a chance to meet the Jagged Globe team (assuming they are not up on the mountain!). Lunch is prepared by our chef and served in our base camp tent. Return to Gorak Shep.

Day 18 - 21: Kala Pattar (5,545m) and return trek to Lukla You can make a morning ascent of Kala Pattar, before making your way back down the valley. You'll take four days to descend the Khumbu Valley via Pheriche, Pangboche and Monjo.
