Climb a technically easy 6,000m peak in Northern India

Introduction

Rupshu is a fascinating region in south east Ladakh, quite different from the gorges and deep valleys of the Zanskar Range to the west. There are wide open spaces, salt, and fresh water lakes, countless rolling hills over 6,000m high and gently glaciated plateaus. The highest of these is Lungser Kangri to the East of Tso Moriri, the biggest of the lakes. On the west shore of Tso Moriri is the small village of Korzok, the hub of this area, the home of the Changpa nomads and a destination for trekking groups and jeep safaris.

At 6,662m, Lungser Kangri is about as high as you can get without any mountaineering experience. It is a true 'trekking peak', similar in difficulty to Mera Peak in Nepal. You need to wear crampons, but with just 450m of altitude gain from the top camp, it is relatively 'easy' and takes about 5 hours. The views across Eastern Ladakh from the summit are stunning. Before climbing Lungser Kangri, you complete an approach trek through the popular Markha Valley. It takes you over passes up to 5,197m, to provide essential acclimatisation.

The Expedition Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
